Companies pay YouTube to show us ads. We pay YouTube so they don’t show us ads.
Read that again. Slowly.
It sounds like a joke from a sitcom, but it’s actually one of the greatest business tricks of the modern internet: create a tiny annoyance, make it slightly worse every year, and then charge a monthly fee for the privilege of escaping it.
You have to admire the logic. The platform isn’t just selling a service — it’s running a perfectly legal, wildly profitable, double‑sided toll booth. Advertisers pay to reach us. We pay to avoid being reached. And YouTube collects from both lanes with a smile.
Absurd. Brilliant. And somehow… completely normal now.
